I am a Bachelor of Law (Hons) graduate from Multimedia University, Melaka with a penchant for writing and creating. This post explains my professional experience. I was inspired while making my cover letters to apply for jobs and chambering placements.

Working Life

Though I am a law graduate, I am currently working as a Content Writer at Deriv Services Sdn Bhd. Though it is something I don’t much experience in and I’m completely out of my comfort zone, it provides me with the right amount of challenge to get me through the day.

I have experience as a Digital Marketing Executive in CreateWills Sdn Bhd, where I had also pursued an internship before. Using my law school knowledge in succession and probate law, I created digital messaging which spread awareness to the public on the necessity of a Will in simple terms with interesting and eye-catching visuals. In fulfilling this role, I had also done much research on the area of inheritance law in Malaysia, both conventional and Islamic.

I had previously done my legal internship at Messrs Bell & Lee, Melaka. Though my internship was 3 months long, it was unfortunately during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. I only physically entered the office on the first two days and the last week of my internship period. During the gap between those periods, I was mainly tasked to do legal research on various areas of law such as contract law, tort law and land law.

In the short time I had in the office, I mainly double checked and filled up the status report of conveyancing files. I also had the opportunity to help prepare part of the paperwork for a litigation case. I even had a chance to sit in and observe a brainstorming session for a civil suit. Unfortunately, I was not lucky enough to attend a court hearing.

What I Believe In – My Passions

One thing I have always loved, since I was in primary school, is writing. There is just something about stringing multiple words together to draw a mental image that made me happy. The fact that I was good at it didn’t hurt either. My English and Malay language teachers would often praise my essays for being both grammatically and creatively pleasing (though, English is clearly my stronger suit). Because of my talent and passion in writing, my parents thought it fitting for me to enter the legal field.

Much like the meme, “Graphic design is my passion”. However, I am still in the process of learning. Due to my creativity and love for aesthetics, I had picked up simple designing using Microsoft PowerPoint and Canva. It helped me whenever we were required to create presentation slides or posters for events. Over time, I have also learned the ways of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, but Canva is still my go-to.

Veritas Aequitas

I am passionate about deterring wrongdoings and speaking up for marginalised communities. Because of that, I was especially interested in the subjects of criminal law, public international law, environmental law and human rights law. This, coupled with my love of writing, prompted me to apply for KiniAcademy’s Investigative Journalism workshop under MalaysiaKini, for which I was selected. I was put in a group with a seasoned journalist and a recent communications graduate. Together, we were assigned to investigate a tale of woe of a community in a not-so-remote kampung in Hulu Langat, Selangor not having access to clean water. Working on the story for months, we published our piece on both The Malay Mail and FijiAsia.

In October 2021, when there were initial talks of having the Malacca state elections, I wrote a piece on the Malaccans’ concerns regarding the upcoming election. I did this by gathering the opinions of Malaccans from different backgrounds to be impartial.

Moreover, for my final trimester criminal trial advocacy subject, I managed to score a high grade due to my passionate arguments and relentless cross-examination skills. I was also commended by my lecturers for thinking outside the box and from angles which were unique in order to win a case. This was especially true in cases where my partner and I drew the shorter end of the stick and were assigned an impossible to win case.

Being a content creator and publishing my work on the Internet, intellectual property law and cyber law also pique my interest. This is because I would like to ensure that creative rights are protected and privacy in the online world is respected if not adhered to. I also believe that cyber crimes which are rampant in our current tech-savvy society should be treated similarly as traditional crimes.

In addition, alternative dispute resolution also appeals to me as I consider myself someone who would like to provide a win-win situation whenever any conflict arises. I am generally a non-confrontational person and talking things out is my go-to move, even when I have conflict between my peers

What I Can Do – My Skills

I am a skilled communicator as I have worked as a student helper for Multimedia University (MMU) on multiple occasions, namely on their Info Day, Open Day and a number of Education Fairs. My tasks included helping to promote MMU to prospective students and their parents, aiding them to fill up information into the system to register for the course of their choice and bringing them on a campus tour when they wanted to view the campus. I had also shared my experience as an MMU student for marketing events such as MMU Info Day and Open Day on campus, and Education Fairs out of campus. On certain occasions, I also helped with telemarketing.

Moreover, my experience in joining a variety of clubs and societies have taught me the value of teamwork and the art of communication. Events and activities that I have participated and organised both within campus and outside of campus, in addition to the leadership positions I have been bestowed have shaped me into the person I currently am.

My foundation studies, namely the subject of Computer Applications, has prepared me with the necessary skills in manning Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. Moreover, the current pandemic which caused classes to be shifted online has also pushed me to use Google Docs, Google Slides and Google Sheets when it comes to collaborative efforts.
